1983 chevy celebrity choke light on

Hi I have just bought a 1983 chevy celebrity, this car is in very good
shape with 85000 miles. It has a gas engine, carb. it has a choke light
that stayed lit for about 5 minutes at first, but now it stays on a the
time, it seems to run fine, with the exception of a slightly higher
idle,at first warm up.Does anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong ?

Your carburetor has a heated choke on the side of it that is not working. Because of that, it is not coming off fast idle as quickly as needed. The heating element may be burned out, but most likely the connectin is bad and all you need to do is clean it. You could also check the continuity of the heating element to be sure of its integrity.

The idle is also controlled by a choke pull-off that is adjustable. It's very sensitive and I would not touch it in this situation. When that fails, the choke does not open properly and the engine runs very rich. This is not your situation. I'm just adding it for completeness.
