Post subject: 1975 Super Beetle Tires

I have recently acquired a 1975 Super Beetle and my husband tells me I should purchase new tires however I am not sure what tire size I should go with as I am not sure what was the tire size used back in 1975. Any advice would be greatly appreciate.

I can be contacted at karenmcfadden.TakeThisOut@hotmail.com if you can offer any advice re tires.

Eddie, thanks for the referral to RAMVA.
Caroline, she may not be able to find tires in that size anymore.

I noticed the original post was a forward, so I wonder if nana even
sees this newsgroup. I followed the forward back and found her email
address and sent her the following... but with no response as of yet.

Beetles and Supers came with 5.60-15 tires. Translated into today's
metric schema, that's a 155/80-15... a size that's virtually
impossible to find.

I run 165/80-15 tires on my '74 Super, but that size is also becoming
scarce.

If you have 15x5.5 rims (15" in diameter, 5.5" wide), you can also use
185/70-15 and 195/65-15 tires. These sizes have a slightly different
height, and will affect the accuracy of your speedometer.

One other tire-related note... run 18psi in the front tires and 29psi
in the rears. The VWs weight distribution needs softer tires in front
to help grab the road. Super Beetles get very skittish at higher
speeds with over-inflated tires.

Why not just buy tyres the same size as are on it now.....?

Jim,
Thanks for the info on the tires. I will need to replace mine soon.
There is a local VW parts store within 5 minutes from me so parts and
tires are no problem.

I sincerely doubt that the tyres on her beetle are the originals from
1975....so someone replaced them at sometime surely?

I'm truly staggered that you have such a problem sourcing tyres over
there...?

I don't have any problems at all sourcing tyres for any of my beetles, my T3
or my baywindow....and I can't comprehend not being able to find whatever
size I want or need?

Every day is a school day I guess ;o)
