My husband has just aquired a few of his fathers old cars, one being a
68 olds conv 442 77,000 origianl miles, matching numbers , no rust -
blue - needs rstoration . This paticular car is not a 4-speed , it was
special ordered, it has a 400 engine , 2 barrel carbs, and dual
exhaust, any info anybody might have on these cars would interest me ,
a good asking price etc.

I would think that convertable would START an asking price of $5000. It
would go up (or down) depending the true shape of the car. Without pics its
hard to tell.

Hey, don't mean to be a stickler for details, but in everything I've
read (or watched on the Speed channel), 442 means 4 barrel, 4 speed, and
dual exhaust.

So, to say it's a 442, and then say well only the '2' applies would make
most folks suspicious.

If you've checked some VIN numbers, and those indicate 442, then go
ahead and call it that. If all you have to go on is that someone put an
emblem on it, heck, I'm going to make a few 442's of my own Smile

"442" only means 4 barrel, 4 speed and dual exhaust for certain
years. Some years it was for a 400 engine and other variation of the
number scheme. The last 442's made were smaller displacement, fuel
injected front wheel drive models.

From 442.com FAQ page:
Meaning(s)
Definition of 4-4-2 from the Oldsmobile Factory Literature:
1964 (Original meaning)
4: Four Barrel Carburetion
4: Four On the Floor
2: Dual Exhausts

1965 (First year of automatic transmission option on 442)
4: 400 Cubic Inch Displacement
4: Four Barrel Carburetion
2: Dual Exhausts

1985 to 1987 (Last of RWD 442s)
4: Four speed automatic
4: Four barrel carburetor
2: Dual exhaust

1990 and 1991 (FWD 442)
4: Four cylinders
4: Four valves
2: Two camshafts

That 400 engine makes the value estimation drop 12% and the
transmission makes it lose another 10%
