Hi All,

My first Post. I'm trying to locate the VIN number locations on a 1956
Cadillac, Style 56-6239DX. Obviously on the registration and second
somewhere on the engine. Anything more specific would be greatly
appreciated. Question

Jerry

In 1949 through 1957, the Cadillac engine number is stamped on a flat
boss on the upper right corner of the front face of the right side of
the engine block. The frame number is (or was, when new) the same as
the engine number and is stamped on the top flange of the right side
frame rail to the rear of the engine support bracket.

The number should consist of 2 digits for the year, two digits for the
model and 6 digits for the sequential production number. A 1956 62
Series would be 5662xxxxxx.

BTW, while you are looking for a vehicle identification number, it is
not a "VIN". That designation, by agreement and definition, refers to
the standardized 17 digit alpha-numeric format in use since 1981.

My books go only up to 1953, but, according to Chilton's, in 1953, Cadillac put
the numbers on a boss cast on the front face of the right-hand block and on the
right frame side bar behind the engine support bracket. Perhaps they did the
same in '56.
