Our 1994 318i is getting tired now, so we're thinking of replacing it.
We've come across a 156 2.5 V6 Q-System, and I am looking for feedback on
the box and car in general.

We like the idea of another automatic, none of this sillyspeed stuff, but a
proper autobox with a torque convertor. I was initially concerned that the
box might prove as unreliable as the famed Renault autoboxes, but an
Austrailian article I came across suggested that the box was supplied by
Asin[sic]. Aisin are part of the Toyota group, and the box in my MKIV Supra
turbo is an Aisin one, so I'm quite relieved to hear this but would
appreciate feedback all the same.

Is the box known to be reliable?

How about the 2.5 V6 in general? I can't remember whether it's the V6s or
the twinsparks which ate cambelts and killed themselves. A search of 156 V6
on eBay yeilds no cars for sale, but there are a good few adverts for
replacement engines, fitted, which can't be a good sign, can it?

It's a lovely looking car, and I know the Alfa V6 is a much loved engine
particularly in terms of sound, so I'm hoping any feedback will be positive.

thanks very much,
Carl

Nevermind. The car we were looking at seems to have disappeared off
autotrader this morning. Advert may have just expired rather than the car
sold, but it's not on pistonheads either Sad

Well, maybe the cars shows up again.
A collegue of mine drove a 2002 166 with same enigine/gearbox for 4 years
and 120.000km.
He drove the car on LPG-fuel, only an offcial service every 20.000km
Only thing he remembers that the car never broke down; as it was a lease car
he has no idea about the service costs.
Only a few light bulbs failed and he needed to top up the oil with in total
1 liter over the 20.000km service interval periodes.
Fuel effciency was quite o.k as he recalls 9,2km/ltr
Over the 120.000km he needed 4 winter tyres (at the end min. profile) and 6
summer tyres (at the end 2 of them had min. profile and 2 still had 80%
profile)
Ciao

I've had a 1999 156 2.5 v6 q-system since 2000, ex hire car, no significant
probs, needed a new air flow sensor a few miles back, common prob, serviced
every 12,000 miles, had cam belts changed at 48000 in case, 80000 miles now.
No idea who makes the auto box but works very well, never use the q-system
"manual change", if I want quick acceleration I just press the sport mode
button. Easy to drive except steering lock poor but you can't have
everything. Suprisingly few bits dropped off compared to my other Alfas and
it has been more reliable than work colleagues Golf/Merc.

That's good to know. Thanks Chris.
The autobox is made by Aisin, which from my experience is a very good thing.
