Hello - I have a 2004 F-150 4-wheel drive truck. It has recently started to
make a clunking noise accompanied with a vibration right around 46 miles per
hour, about where it would shift into over drive. Anyone familiar with
this problem? How can I begin to narrow this down and do some diagnostics?
Thanks!

Have you ever done a transmission fluid change or filter change? IIRC, the
fluid/filter change is specified for 30k mile intervals. Any shift problems
or shudder, particularly with OD, are likely related to old fluid. Even if
you were under warranty, Ford would tell you that the first thing to do is
change the fluid and filter.

Make sure you check the U joints. You may have had one go prematurely! This
causes a clunking noise and because it is out of round, it causes a rumble
when spinning at higher speeds due to imbalance.

Been there, had that happen!

Excellent point, even for a top poster! JK

In all seriousness, even if you find a universal joint problem, you still
need to service the transmission if you haven't.

Thanks all. I'll start with a fluid/filter change and inspection of the
U-joints.
