That problem was cleared up by 2002 by improving the crankcase ventilation
system. Even in the years it was a problem, it usually didn't happen if
you followed the recommended maintenance schedule.

I had the problem in my 2000 Avalon V6, but I bought it used and the
previous owner (who was leasing) apparently did not change the oil and
filter as recommended.

How one changed the oil had nothing to do with what the cause of the problem
that Toyota refers to a 'gelling.' The sludge was the result of a change in
the head design, according to Toyota when the extended the warranty, on the
effected engine , to eight years unlimited mileage. Not to worry however,
the question of a 2006 have the problem is moot, since they essentially went
back to using the prior head design on all engines installed after August of
2003.
