Also, the engine light doesn't come on. Nothing lights up when this
happends.

Sounds like a problem with the key tumbler itself.
Take it to the dealer or a trusted repair shop and
have that component replaced.

Yup. Go to a trusted auto repair shop and let em take care of it. If the owner before you is just near your place, you might want to visit him and ask about it(if he was experiencing that problem as well back then).He might be of help. And if it's second hand, maybe the http://www.partstrain.com/ShopByVehicle/DODGE/DAKOTA (dodge auto parts) are already worn out and already need replacements.
