Post subject: 03 Outback: standoffs for heatshield flattened -> hit driveshaft
Archived from groups: alt>autos>subaru (more info?)

I drive my 2003 Outback on some fairly rough roads, and I've flattened two
of the heatshield standoffs on rocks. The consequence is that the
heatshield occassionally gets pushed up against the drive shaft, and makes a
real racket. I've pried the shield back down multiple times, but it often
settles back up against the drive shaft, or just vibrates noisily, since it
is not held in place at two points.

Is this a common problem, and if so, are there simple solutions? The design
seems stupid to me, as the standoffs are sitting ducks for rough roads. I'd
replace them, but they look like obvious targets for rocks. The exhaust
system itself is fairly well protected, and I have skid plates front and
rear.

K&N for Outback - I have a 97 Outback wagon automatic. Since I can't get a cold air intake for the car, I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience replacing just the air filter -- performance, mileage, etc. In other words, will it pay for itself over time....

'97 Outback oil consumption - My new/used Outback is going through a quart of oil about every 2000 miles. This sounds about normal to me. What say you? The engine has about 35k on it. Thanks. Sheldon sheldon@sopris.net

1997 Subaru Outback - Looking at getting this rig, however, there is a slight tick in the engine, particular when you rev it up. Is this something I should be concerned with? 160kms and timing belt changed.

New tires for an Outback? - It's time for new tires on my 2000 Outback, and I'm debating what to get. Right now I'm debating between either Goodyear Assurance TripleTred and BF Goodrich Traction T/A-H tires. Any useful comments are welcome, especially in areas regarding gas..

07 outback questions - Thinking of getting a new 07 outback. Will the manual transmission be better than my 98 Forester? (I hope so as it's a little finnicky) Our Forester has been pretty reliable but what about the outbacks? Searching finds some people have had..
