I have a 93 Accord w/ 160K miles. I am wondering how far it can go before it
dies such that I can decide how much investment I will put in in terms of
repair/maintenance. Do you guys know usually how much more an Accord like
this can last? I have been doing regular scheduled maintenance. Thanks.

That's still young for a Honda. Well, ok, maybe it's closer to middle
aged. I've seen well maintained and cared for Hondas reach 325K miles. My
own has 221K miles on it.

'91 at 166k and running strong!

I just replaced both axles, front rotors/brakes, and a new muffler. Worth
every penny. It gets better mileage than my '01 EX V6.

If you can maintain the body you got many more years of service remaining.
Our 92 is starting to rust and at $3000 for a decent body and paint job I
figure we will ride er as is and buy new in about two years.

It should last you several more years. However, when it hits the 200,000
mark, I suggest that you do a complete tune-up that includes adjusting the
valves and checking the compression of each cylinder. The results of that
tune-up should tell you a lot about the condition of your engine. With any
engine that has over 160,000 miles--don't be surprised if various items
such as the battery, starter and alternator start wearing out. As long as
the motor and transmission don't develop problems--you are ahead of the
game.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I was in EXACTLY the same boat as you with my daughter's 1991 Accord. She
needed the car for college. This 1991 Accord LX 4 door has 161k miles. The
hood was repainted, but the original paint on the trunk and roof is peeling,
so may need that fixed. But, I did elect to replace both front axles
($572), perform a major service ($359), and have the timing belt replaced
($474). As it turns out, it needs new plug wires ($66) and a clutch
cylinder which is leaking ($217). I will do the latter two. I already
replaced the dead ignition coil ($94). The paint may be another $700 for
just a cheap paint job.

I chose to make this investment for the following reasons:

1) I am the original owner. I KNOW the car, and it has been well
maintained and not abused. As others said, I expect it to go well past
200,000 miles. The rest of the drivetrain, interior, etc. are in good
health.

2) The repairs made will last a long time. Certainly a long time with the
limited mileage my daughter will put on the car.

3) After repairs (including paint), I am down by $2,500. If I sold the car
prior to repairs for $2,000, I am up by $2,000. To put myself in the same
financial position, I am now (down $2,500), I could sell the Accord prior to
repairs and then buy another car for $4,500. Would such a car be better
than the Accord with paint and fresh repairs? After looking at the
classified, that is possible, but then there is a risk with any used car.
Few would have such fresh repairs as the Accord. My guess is that I would
probably be a bit better off purchasing something like a used Civic for
$4,500, but this was a close decision.

4) The car has just one door ding in it, and the rest of the car is in near
perfect condition. The tires are new and the brakes fresh.

I have 91 Accord Ex and I am the sixth owner. I was first very hesitant to
buy it but I got this one for $2500 with a clean title and mileage of 132K
and most of my friends said to go for it looking at my budget.
I have done just regular maintenance on it like oil change. Other
investments include tire change( appx $240 for 4), Engine Mount Changed
($140) got whole car repainted ($222 - cause had to change hood due to lots
of scratches) otherwise the car's original paint was just too good.
Now at 152K , I have to get the timing belt /water pump changed as a part of
the Service.
I hear rattling noises in the rear of car (dont know why - something to do
with springs in the rear wheel ? -- need some feedback from the group).
A/C has some problem as it does not cool for long. Front speakers work
sometimes and sometimes they dont.
Other then that this car is really good and has never stopped or given any
problem except once I had to change the main relay( which I guess is a very
known problem in 91- 93 Hondas).
I would say Honda engines are the best when considering their life, if they
are maintained properly.

Thanks
HNewbie.
