I was in EXACTLY the same boat as you with my daughter's 1991 Accord. She
needed the car for college. This 1991 Accord LX 4 door has 161k miles. The
hood was repainted, but the original paint on the trunk and roof is peeling,
so may need that fixed. But, I did elect to replace both front axles
($572), perform a major service ($359), and have the timing belt replaced
($474). As it turns out, it needs new plug wires ($66) and a clutch
cylinder which is leaking ($217). I will do the latter two. I already
replaced the dead ignition coil ($94). The paint may be another $700 for
just a cheap paint job.
I chose to make this investment for the following reasons:
1) I am the original owner. I KNOW the car, and it has been well
maintained and not abused. As others said, I expect it to go well past
200,000 miles. The rest of the drivetrain, interior, etc. are in good
health.
2) The repairs made will last a long time. Certainly a long time with the
limited mileage my daughter will put on the car.
3) After repairs (including paint), I am down by $2,500. If I sold the car
prior to repairs for $2,000, I am up by $2,000. To put myself in the same
financial position, I am now (down $2,500), I could sell the Accord prior to
repairs and then buy another car for $4,500. Would such a car be better
than the Accord with paint and fresh repairs? After looking at the
classified, that is possible, but then there is a risk with any used car.
Few would have such fresh repairs as the Accord. My guess is that I would
probably be a bit better off purchasing something like a used Civic for
$4,500, but this was a close decision.
4) The car has just one door ding in it, and the rest of the car is in near
perfect condition. The tires are new and the brakes fresh.
